The Birkin. A fashion legend. The bag that put Hermés on everyones mind. A couple of years ago, if you had a Birkin, you had ‘made it’. The Birkin was the ultimate fashion goal. Worth $10,000 and up, it was a symbol of social and economic status. Even Samantha on Sex and the City practically fought to have a Birkin of her own. It was the top tier- the ultimate accessory.
However, a new bag has taken the fashion world by storm. The Celíne Luggage. As the Birkin represents prestige and old money, the Luggage shows style. The reign of the Birkin is slowly coming to a close. The new, young women in the industry are all carrying Celíne, not Hermés. Could this just be a phase of fashion evolution? How Chanel No. 5, with the help of Marilyn Monroe, was the biggest fragrance of her time, and now, the generation between teens and mid-twenties recognize it as, quote, “old lady perfume”, and is hardly ever worn by women of that demographic? Are people associating Birkins with old age- worn out and out of date like Chanel No.5?
All I know is that on a walk down Madison, every Birkin is worn by a middle aged woman, whereas the Celíne Luggage is on the hands of every stylish woman in her twenties and early thirties. Perhaps a new accessory is taking the throne.
